DetailsThe Freeway between Hawkesbury River and Calga opened as a toll road in December 1965. Toll gates were installed on the north side of the river at Mooney Mooney.
The section of freeway between Berowra and the Hawkesbury River was opened in December 1968 and another set of toll barriers were installed on the south side of the river at Cowan.
The toll barriers at Mooney Mooney were used until 1973 when they were abolished to improve traffic flow. The toll barriers at Cowan remained in use until December 1988. The former toll site at Cowan is now occupied by the NSW Rural Fire Service.
