DetailsThe Junior Red Cross Movement, founded by Eleanor MacKinnon, encouraged the usefulness of children in the war effort. Begun initially at the time of World War I, the group at Pennant Hills Public School began in the late 1920s and was very active over the duration of World War II. On a visit to the school in 1944, the Inspector noted that pupils had done "commendable work in connection with the War Effort". Under the guidance and tutorship of teachers and parents children were taught to knit garments and organise fund raising activities for the soldiers. Throughout the war, the Department of Education received numerous requests from patriotic funds soliciting the assistance of children for various fundraising activities. School children assisted the Fruit and Vegetable Fund and the War Chest.
