StreetMaranta StreetSuburbHornsbyDetails"Maranta Street was a bush track winding around big gum trees when we bought our block of land in 1945. The children used to pick white spider orchids, 'eggs and bacon' and other wild flowers in the street. Our block was a bush block and we cleared it ourselves, coming up from Neutral Bay by tram and train at weekends and walking out to the block, Rick carrying a pick and axe and me pushing the stroller with the baby aboard and Carol toddling beside. After many delays, because of shortage of building material, eventually we moved in early in 1948.
Our transport was a small almost square bus called by locals 'the butter box'. It ran along Galston Road to Hookham's Corner and into Hornsby. The seating was around the bus, not seats one behind the other. The bus did not run at weekends, but it ran in the early morning to take workers to the train, then to take in the school children, a trip in the middle of the day and again in the afternoon to bring home the school children, and at 6 o'clock to bring home the workers. Today Maranta Street is sealed but some of the very large trees have survived down the centre of the street, and every block of land (all 1/4 acre blocks) is built on."
