StreetCitrus AvenueSuburbHornsbyDetailsCitrus Avenue was named for an orchard, but one with an interesting story, and a connection with the railway line. The orchard of Hugh Fear was started in 1862 long before the railway came to Hornsby; the road to Milson's Point was just a wide bush track. Hugh and Rachel Fear created a beautiful orchard, from seedling of citrus, nd apples, peaches and pears, which were transported to the city by horse and cart. The railway line crossed the eastern tip of Hugh Fear's orchard when it went through in 1886. The Fear's had eight children; the original site of their first home went to the eldest son, John, when he married, and the other site, near Mildred Avenue, to Hugh, the other brother. Citrus Avenue runs between the two properties. It derives its name from the very fine oranges Hugh grew.Source'Advocate' Sept 13 1967, p.22; 'Pioneers of Hornsby Shire, 1979, pp.210-211.Map[1] RelatedPlan of Hugh Fear's property
