StreetSummerhill WaySuburbBerowraDetailsAlf Summerhill came to Berowra in 1914 and attended Berowra Public School until 1918. For two years Alf carted produce for poultry farmers. Then he worked for the Council carting with a horse and dray. During the 1920’s, he carted rock and earth from the cuttings for the Pacific Highway and as a second job drove passengers to and from Berowra Waters.
He continued working for the Council during the depression on roadworks, culverts, parks, drains and clearing. It was very hard to keep the horses up to the work and Alf went through five of the Council’s horses from 1920 to 1940, who often needed a month to recover after being worked down to Brooklyn.
For decades he ploughed the blocks of bush for people coming into Berowra. He had eight children. His wife died in 1964 and Alf retired in 1966 after 47 of the hardest years working for the Council. When Council talks about developing the Shire these are the sort of people who do it.Map[1]
